I know from experience that job hunting is tough. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of 7 great job interview tips that might get you on the payroll. Searching for a job, setting up interviews and dealing with a human relations department can be stressful. If you’re in the market for a job, you probably fall in one of three categories. One, you’re still in the workforce and are wanting to make a career change. Two, you’re unemployed or underemployed. Three, you’re retired or needing a second job to supplement your income. No matter which of the three categories you find yourself in, these interview tips might improve your odds at finding the job you want.
1. Update your Resume.
One of the best job interview tips that I can give is that you update and revise your resume, and keep it current if you are still in the workforce. This is absolutely one of the most essential keys to getting an interview and possibly a position. Make sure that you list your most recent jobs and include those that go back no more than 15 years. If you have been out of the workforce for a while, only list your most recent positions. Be sure to include any educational background or credentials you have earned. One caution, if you are a little older, be careful about adding information that would give away your age and possibly cost you a crucial interview. If you have a particular company in mind, find out what kind of resume they like. Some HR departments prefer a detailed, lengthy resume and others like one or two pages at the most. Also, most companies do not want a paper resume handed to them. You should know how to use email and how to save your resume in a PDF format. This is important so that you can send them to an online site or print them out to give to the Human Resources Department. I highly suggest mailing a resume as well as emailing one to the company.
2. Take A Look At Your Overall Appearance.
First impressions are everything, even if it’s only a profile photo. I think that this is one of the most neglected job interview tips. Your personal style is very important and speaks very clearly about who you are without you having to say a word. If you have neglected your appearance, now is the time to start getting yourself in shape. Don’t wait till an interview is a week away and try a crash diet, exercise routine, and a complete makeover. Start eating right, start getting some exercise, and begin making any changes you think you need to now. This will help raise your stamina, increase your mental alertness, and give you more confidence as well. If you’ve spent most of your time indoors lately, get out and get some sun. You will look more vibrant, feel healthier, and that might create a better first impression. Another important thing that you may want to do is double-check your wardrobe and update it if necessary. Your clothes need to look current but not trendy. Remember that fashion changes but style is timeless.
3. Sell your strong points.
Go after the job where you can use your skills and abilities to the fullest. Many of us have had that feeling of being trapped in a job that is not fulfilling. You can search the internet for all kinds of job interview tips, but the fact is, you don’t want to be mismatched for a job. This is the time for you to target what you really want to do with the rest of your life. Once you get it narrowed down, pursue it.
4. Do your job search online, but go in person.
If you are genuinely wanting to land a good paying job, learn how to search for one online.This is one of those job interview tips you cannot afford to overlook.Newspaper classifieds are great if you are looking for a part-time job or want to supplement your income. Generally speaking companies who are looking for qualified people will lean toward taking online applications, but showing up in person may make the difference. In a recent article Forbes Magazine recommended sites like SimplyHired.com and Monster.com as some of the best websites to use in searching for a job. These sites give helpful advice about resumes and cover letters. They also offer up selected content that features new blogs and videos. They highlight genuine success stories about people who have found jobs or started their own flourishing businesses. They give some very practical information and job interview tips to help you find a position.
5. Use social networks.
LinkedIn is a great site that’s geared to help you connect with prospective employers, as well as other’s in your field. You can greatly benefit from this online community to give you all kinds of job interview tips. They can point you in the right direction for locating a job in your specific area of expertise. It’s free and only takes a few minutes to sign up. Here is a great checklist to make sure you have everything.
6. Follow-up on your resume.
Don’t be shy. If you don’t get a response to a resume within a few days, do a follow-up. Companies are swamped with applicants and sometimes just displaying a little more initiative will help you land the position. Check back with the HR department in person if you can and leave a business card.

Although this is number seven in our job interview tips list, it might be one of your best bets. I have used a temporary placement service myself to gain entry to full-time employment. Often the pay is not the greatest and benefits are limited, but a temporary placement service has two key advantages. First, it gives you an opportunity to gain a perspective about the inner workings of a company and decide whether you want to seek a position with them. Secondly, it allows the employer the chance to see what you can do. This could lead to a full-time employment situation that would be beneficial to both you and the company.
